D:
Where do people have the biggest challenge with your program and what can do to
get past that?
Another
one of your questions was what are some of the things they may be able to get
by with? I would say there are a fair number of people with psoriasis that also
benefit from removing the gluten from their diet. And gluten is a protein found
in grains like wheat.
If
you have an issue with gluten then you have probably had a lifelong issue with
gluten and if that's the case when gluten as an undigested protein exits the
gut and gets in the bloodstream and then gets to the brain, it can have an
opiate effect on the brain. And lifelong opiates on the brain have a way of
being addictive. So it can be very, very hard to go on a gluten-free diet.
It
can also be very hard because our American diet and our American lifestyle are
built around the idea that fast food is going through a drive through. And what
people don't realize is that you can eat not only very healthy but save money
by staying at home and understanding some simple principles of how to assemble
food and make it much healthier. And spend far less time than you would driving to the drive through line and ordering your food and
going through it. And all the time associated with not only the health expense
but the health consequence from eating foods that come through fast food
restaurants on a regular basis.
And
now what's especially nice is that we have places like Costco where I buy 90%
of all my groceries at Costco. And that means I'm paying wholesale prices for
my groceries. Costco is available on a nationwide basis. A lot of people think
that they're going to spend a lot more money on their food but what I've found
that by shopping at Costco and by vastly reducing my intake of alcohol and meat
means that my food costs are far, far less than it used to be. Certainly my
healthcare costs.
There's
no way for me to estimate how much this way of eating has saved me because not
only did I avoid indefinite rounds of chemo but I also use to be on inhalers. I
was constantly wheezing. I couldn't have pets because I was so allergic to cats
and dogs. I lost weight and that certainly has its own savings down the line
for me in terms of health care costs, too.
But
not only am I off inhalers, I no longer have to go to an allergy doctor every
year like clockwork for prescription allergy medications since I changed my
diet. Now I have an 80 pound, shedding black lab that needs to be walked
several miles a day since I changed my diet. This dog makes me go out every
single day and exercise outdoors which is all part of this lifestyle.
It's
all part of reducing my total healthcare expense in helping me to be healthy
and independent of very expensive health care systems for as long as possible.
So the hardest thing I think is the potential addictions that can be associated
with foods and then secondly, a lot of people especially now think that by
going to a healthier diet that it's going to cost them more, but in fact, my
food costs are probably half of what they used to be...literally. Because of Costco and because I'm not buying alcohol and I'm not
buying meat regularly.
But
Costco has all kinds of organic produce. I buy my organic peanut butter and
almond butter. They have a whole bunch of stuff that's literally the exact same
brand that's available at Whole Foods but when I buy it at Costco I save at
least 40%.
