D:
Is there anything else you wanted to add what we've already covered?
Outside
of the six month period [when I first started on the diet], I don't do this
diet perfectly. I allow for some flexibility every day. I generally shoot for
an average of 85% compliance which means that every single day I can cheat a
little bit. And I personally think that's really important for sustainability.
If
you allow yourself for flexibility then that means that where the average may
be 80% that means that I can travel anytime, anywhere and go into any
restaurant and any grocery store anywhere in the world and I can figure out how
to make it work.
I
have not had to do this perfectly to get a seven year remission. Am I only
organic? No, I'm not. Am I majority organic? Am I by any means always
plant-based whole foods? I'm pretty
sure I cheat every day at least a little bit and some days I cheat a whole lot
more than others.
D:
I think that's really great news for a lot of people to hear that.
That
was probably the single most important thing I learned in my first fifteen
years as a registered dietitian. When a diet is made too strict, very, very,
very, very few people are going to stick with it.
That's
why my book is called Your Healing Diet because it's not my healing diet. It's
your healing diet because if they don't make it their own and make it fit in
their own lifestyle, they'll have a very short lived experience. And if it's a
short lived experience, from a healing perspective, the chances of success are
very small.
